The Spanish singer Luz Casal addressed the opening conference of the XIII International Music School Summer Courses of the Prince of Asturias Foundation on Tuesday 22nd July. The event was held at 11a.m. at the "Eduardo Martínez Torner" Advanced Conservatory of Music in Oviedo. Last year, the opening conference was chaired by Fernando Argenta, presenter of the music programmes "Clasicos Populares? (Popular Classics) and "El Conciertazo" (The Big Concert).
Also, as part of this event, the best bagpipers in the world performed in Oviedo. This took place on 21st and 22nd July, during which a conference and concert, both open to the public, were held.
The following musicians visited Oviedo as exponents of the main types of universal bagpipes: Fred Morrison (Scotland), Jarlath Henderson (Ireland), Jurak Dufek (Slovakia), Marie Le Cam (France), Anxo Lorenzo (Galicia) and Xuacu Amieva (Asturias). The concert also featured the French Air Force and Navy Band, the Bagdad de Lann-Bihoué.
The conference took place at 8pm on Monday, 21st July, in the Chamber Music Hall at the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo. These great figures of bagpipe music were the main attraction in this event. They each described their respective instruments to then offer a brief musical performance. The conference was chaired by Xuacu Amieva, professor of Asturian Bagpipes and Folk Music Ensemble at the International Music School.
In addition to this, a concert was held on Tuesday 22nd July, in which eight of the most interesting types of bagpipe styles from the six most representative countries came together. The concert was free to the public and took place at 8p.m. in the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo.
Summer Courses
The XIII Summer School will be held at the "Eduardo Martínez Torner" Advanced Conservatory of Music and at the Prince Felipe Auditorium, both in Oviedo, from 22nd July to 2nd August.
As a novelty this year, the renowned musician, Steve Turre, who teaches at the Juilliard School in New York, one of the most prestigious music teaching centres worldwide, is to give Jazz Ensemble classes at the XIII Summer Courses, as part of the cultural exchange started up between the two institutions.
In addition to the music training, the teachers and students of the School will offer ten concerts; admission to these will be free to the public. There will also be a series of street concerts between 28th July and 1st August, with two concerts each day in charismatic streets and squares in Oviedo.
